RE: Gout

For an acute gout attack, I take Colchicine. When you get diarrhea, you know the medicine is in your system and you quit taking it. It does work on the pain, however. I take Allopurinol on a daily basis. I have not had an acute attack in well over a year or two.

RE: side dishes for 100 help!

Not camping related, but I came here for some help. I Love to cook and I am providing green beans and baked beans for husbands company picnic. I'm not sure how much I will need for 100 people?? Can any one point me in the right direction? Thank you so much! Cherri Generally, Speaking you can get about 25 servings from a number 10 can. If you are going to allow seconds or maybe even thirds, you will need more.

RE: Harvey House

They were travel/whistle stops. There was one in Barstow, Ca. I think it was restored, now a museum of sorts. (from my feeble mind, not googled! Sam Correct, Star awarded. My Dad is the one who first mentioned it to me. According to him, if you ordered food, they had a practice of keeping track of your train schedule and they would bring the food right before your train was due to depart so you had the choice to either eat or get on the train. He told me that they tried to pull that with his father (My Grandfather) and he took dishes, food and everything with him, telling them that he paid for it and he was going to D--N well going to eat it.

Harvey House

Back when people traveled by rail, they had what were called Harvey Houses. Who here knows what they were? A star to the first one who gets the correct answer.

RE: A SMart car in your future?

They market a Diesel version in Canada that gets over 60 Mpg. For some reason. they won't market a Diesel version here.

RE: Is gas hard to find in southern states?

Where I live in Erin, TN, the local BP station has diesel and reg, but nothing else. A week ago we had no fuel at all. I went to the next town over, waverly, TN. The Walmart there had all grades of fuel. Curiously, all of the gas, no matter what grade was the same price. I found that strange. I have never seen that before.

RE: Mortgage interest cutting programs

Nope. Just paid extra on the mortgage every month (contract allowed for early payoff) and paid off mortgage 5 years early and probably saved $40000 in interest. You don't need a 'special' program. I very much agree. You do not need a "Special Program". All you have to do as mentioned above is to make an extra Principal Payment each month. By ding so, you can literally pay off a 30 year Mortgage in 15 years. It would be better to have a 15 year Mortgage to begin with. You can do the same with car payments. I am at least 3 months ahead on my car payments by paying extra each month. I have had it since December. The first Payment was in January of this year.

RE: Daddy/Mommy Bragging Thread

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments. When he came of age he started doing stupid things that could have gotten him into a lot of trouble. He wanted me to bail him out. I told him, I have taught you right from wrong. It is now up to you. You are on your own. I am glad that he chose the right path.

RE: Daddy/Mommy Bragging Thread

My son was born in 1973. His Mother and I divorced in 1978. I finally gained custody of him when he was 17. He had such a bad attitude from being abused by his Mother, that a person could not even have a decent conversation with him. When he was of age, he got married and he and his Wife moved to Moses Lake, WA. They had a Son. He still had a terrible attitude. One day several years ago he was riding his Motorcycle and a lady ran a traffic light and hit him. He was life flighted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He wound up having his right leg amputated below the knee. After that happened, he surprised everyone. His attitude changed for the better. Instead of always looking at himself, he started to focus on others. He became a Prosthetic Technician. He worked in that capacity for quite awhile. He is now going to college in Wyoming, to further his carreer. He has less than one semester to go. After that, he will be transferring to the University of Washington in Seattle. When he gets there, the first year will be regular college classes. After that, will be an internship. Remarkably, he will be doing his internship at Harborview Medical Center, the very same Hospital that performed his amputation. I am constantly amazed about the positive transformation that has taken place in my Son. It is nothing short of a Miracle, if you ask me!

RE: Good People

I have found wallets and purses, etc. These things are not mine so I do everything I can to find the owners and return them. The one that still bothers me is from S. Dak. I found a wallet in the middle of a gravel road. Took quite a while to get a phone number for the man. He came to my house just at dark. Took (grabbed) the wallet from my hand, said his wife was waiting in the car and was in a hurry cause she was late for bingo, turned around and left. Did not ask where i found it. Did not say "Thanks for calling". Nothing. I did not return it to get thanks but I really think he was quite rude. Bette There is no excuse for that kind of rude behavior. He should at the very least have said thank you.

RE: seat belts

This sort of thing happens all too often. A couple of Months ago, I was traveling down U.S. 70 going from Dickson, TN to McEwen, TN. I pulled off to the left side of the road at a market to get a cold drink. I heard a big crash. When I looked back to the left there were two vehicles that had crashed right behind me. One had pulled out and had a tire to blow out. They then crashed headlong into another vehicle. Two people in the car with the blown tire were killed outright. I suspect they were running maypop tires on the car. It is dangerous to run tires like that, you never know when something will happen. I did not know the people, but I feel for their respective families. It all happened a right behind me. I am lucky, I was not involved.

RE: Good People

There are still more people like that that will do good things, rather than bad things. The problem is that all we ever hear in the media is about the bad things.

How Smart is your right foot?

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT? You have to try this , it takes 2 seconds. I could not believe this!!! It is from an orthopedic surgeon............ This will boggle your mind and you will keep you trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain! 1. Without anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......) and while sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles. 2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction. I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

RE: I enjoyed lunch with a new forum friend today!

That is nice. It is wonderful finally getting to meet someone in person that you enjoy talking with online. My Wife Nadean and I had the honor to meet Mandrake this past February. He is a good man. I expect we will be lifelong friends.
